Farm for City Kids
Dear 4th Grade Families,
Please take the time to review this letter again. We have a few more spots available on the farm for our younger students and would love have more of our rising 5thgraders participate. The farm is unique in the country in the services that it provides and has been a treasured experience by our students for years:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
For many years, our rising 5th-8th Grade Students have had the opportunity to participate in a unique educational program, Farms for City Kids, which combines classroom studies with first hand farming experience. This opportunity gives students an understanding of how vital academics are in everyday life experiences. It is my pleasure to announce that this year we have been invited back to Spring Brook Farm in Reading, Vermont during the week of July 24- 28th 2017.
Students attending the farm program will study reading, writing, math, and social studies while engaging in farm tasks- such as learning to care for farm animals. Students will find untapped character strengths, develop teamwork skills and strengthen core values such as hard work, leadership, respect, self-confidence and responsibility. Students are encouraged and challenged to overcome fears, accomplish feats they never imagined and are empowered by the farm staff to achieve success every day.
The trip cost will be $275.00. Students will be provided room, board and transportation to and from the farm. Students will be accompanied by Philip’s Academy faculty and will be instructed by the Spring Brook Farm staff. It is our hope that your students will take advantage of this experience.
To secure your spot:
· Fill out the attached forms and submit either via email to cflowers@pacsnewark.org or drop in Blue Box addressed to Ms. Flowers.
· Once you receive confirmation, submit payment in form of check payable to Philips Academy Charter School.
· For more information about this unique and dynamic program, please visit review their website:

Science Fair/Spectacular
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Friday, June 2nd is rapidly approaching. The students have all been working very hard on their science experiments and are demonstrating responsibility by returning the sheets on time. Here are the following pages once again to ensure this project is handed in on time!
Science Spectacular Worksheets
Science Spectacular Guidelines
While working with your child to complete the sheets for school, they should be carrying out their experiment at home. The final experiment display is due on Friday, June 2nd. On this day, the 4th graders will be celebrating their hard work in their own science spectacular, at 2:30 p.m. in room 314. Prior to the students presenting their science fair projects with all of their family and friends, they will be asked to present their experiment to me. I will be grading the students in three categories: presentation board, presentation conversation, and uniqueness of science question. There will be three judges who will help me determine which students should receive the bronze, silver, and gold metals for their experiment. All students should strive to receive one of these metals. It is important to note that only three metals will be given. I have already had a conversation with the students about this concept. If you have any questions or concerns please email me at jkessler@pacsnewark.org.
Best,
Mrs. Kessler
